Honda Civic and CR-V discontinued in India after Greater Noida plant closure
Honda Cars India has decided to stop production at its facility in Greater Noida, moving all of its manufacturing activities to its second plant in Tapukara, Rajasthan. With this cut, the Japanese carmaker has also decided to stop CKD assembly in India for now, leading to the current Civic and CR-V being discontinued. Earlier in 2020, the diesel versions of these cars were cut with the switch to BSVI norms.
The Greater Noida plant also manufactured the City, whose production will now be shifted to the newer facility in Tapukara. This plant already manufacturers Honda's sub-four-metre offerings, the Amaze, Jazz and WR-V.
Honda seems to have taken this step to streamline it's India business. The carmaker has been very successful with the City but the rest of the range hasn't been able to replicate that. While competition like Hyundai, Tata Motors and Maruti Suzuki has recovered reasonably strongly from the effects of the COVID19 pandemic, Honda has seen its overall sales remain stagnant.
Set up in 1997, Honda's Greater Noida plant is spread across 150 acres and has a production capacity of 1 lakh cars a year. The Tapukara plant is much larger, spread across 450 acres and with an annual capacity of 1.8 lakh cars. This facility has been fully operational since 2014, with the powertrain and press shop opening earlier in 2008.
