The Porsche 911 Sport Classic is the second of four of the retro-themed limited run models that Porsche has plans to launch over the next few years.  The first was the 911 Targa 4S Heritage Design Edition from 2020 which took inspiration from Porsche's most revered offerings from the 1950s and 60s. The 911 Sport Classic moves forward from that, harking back to the 1972 911 Carrera RS 2.7. The Sport Classic also features mechanical enhancements over the standard 992 Carrera and GTS models and is limited to 1,250 units globally. This 992 Sport Classic is also the second 911 Sport Classic, the first coming in 2009.

The 911 Sport Classic is distinct from other 992 Carrera models through its wide body, otherwise standard on Turbo models, and a ducktail spoiler reminiscent of the 1972 original. Also new is the double-bubble roof and the staggered 20 and 21-inch alloy wheels, which are themed after the iconic Fuchs wheels from the first-gen 911.

A new Sport Grey Metallic paint option has been developed for the 2022 911 Sport Classic, and like the 2009 version, is derived from the iconic racing grey of the Porsche 356 from the 1950s. The light grey double strips are fully hand-painted while along these sides buyers can choose to have the classic Porsche logo and a starter number.  There are gold Porsche Exclusive Manufaktur badges on the fenders which would originally house the coachbuilder's name while the engine cover at the rear has a Heritage Editon badges designed to mimic the one awarded to Porsche 356s that did over 1 lakh km in period.

On the inside, the 2022 911 Sport Classic is the first to get two-tone, semi-aniline leather upholstery since the 918. Here the cognac brown and black leather is complemented by black open-pore wood trim. Another distinct feature of the cabin is the checked pepita houndstooth pattern seen on the door panels and seat cushions. This pattern was first seen on the 911 in 1965 and has since become closely associated with Porsches from the era.

The instrument cluster has also been updated with green graphics, while the analogue rev counter now has a more retro0tehemd look to it. Rounding off the changes are a gold 911 plaque and Porsche Exclusive Manufaktur badges. All Sport Classic owners will also get a watch themed after the car's styling cues.

This limited-run Porsche is powered by a 2.7-litre twin-turbo flat-six motor with some model-specific enhancements. The motor puts out 550PS and pairs with a seven-speed DCT or a six-speed manual, making it the more powerful Porsche manual on sale. In the 911 Sport Classic, the motor gets a new process air intake that draws in via ducts under the rear spoiler, negating the need for the side air intakes from the Turbo models. There is also a reworked exhaust system that is louder, helped by reduced cabin insulation. The manual has a rev-matching function too.

The suspension set up is drawn from the 911 GTS and Turbo models and gets adaptive suspension as standard. This has reduced ride height by 10mm while minor changes have been made to the suspension and steering set-up. The 911 Sport Classic is rear-drive only and gets rear-wheel steer as well as carbon-ceramic brakes as standard.
